Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing Food Service Cook in Syracuse, New York
Position Summary: The Food Service Cook position will prepare and serve meals according to cycles menu, monitor methods of food handling, preparation, meal service, and equipment cleaning in accordance with direction from the Regional Manager, Dietary Manager, and facility management.
QUALIFICATIONS: Perform work duties in accordance with company policies, federal and state laws, local standards and guidelines, OSHA, and other applicable regulations. Attend all company designated training as required by manager.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: High School graduate or equivalent education is preferred. Preference is given to persons with education in quantity cooking and therapeutic diets. Minimum one year food service experience in a health care dietary setting is desired. Have general knowledge of quantity food preparation and portioned serving. Verbal and writing abilities necessary to communicate and work effectively with various levels of staff, residents, family members, and the public. Numerical ability necessary to make various computations in keeping work records, and in recipe preparation. Motor coordination and manual dexterity are required to prepare food and operate dietary equipment. Willingness to perform routine, repetitive tasks with frequent interruptions. An appreciation of the value of food and dietary equipment and an awareness of the requirement for careful handling and economy of serving. Ability to read, understand, and follow recipe directions, diet orders, and work assignments. Able and willing to work flexible hours, such as during an emergency situation. Must be patient and tolerant toward staff, residents, and family members.
Education & Experience: The ability to read, write, and speak English is essential. No formal education is required. A high-school diploma is desirable. Some college is helpful. Previous experience in a healthcare facility, specifically the dietary department is helpful, but on-site training and orientation will be provided. The ability to provide and follow oral, written, and verbal instructions is vital. The ability to work in a healthcare environment and conduct themselves professionally and appropriately as required. The ability to fulfill all pre-employment requirements as deemed necessary by the individual facility and company.
Physical & Mental Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to be on his/her feet for extended periods of time. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp utensils or carry pots and pans. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as crates, bags or cartons of canned or fresh produce. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, or bulk food carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
