POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Incumbents in this class perform Security Officer-non-sworn (security guard licensing required) related functions at the Community College, involving the responsibility for maintaining order, working with partner agencies enforcing the Laws of the State of New York, for the security of College property (any of the 5 campus sites), and for the safety of students, visitors and staff. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Fire and Public Safety, with considerable latitude allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Maintains order on campus and be able to provide safety at all campuses, 24/7/365.

  • Performs security work, fire prevention; emergency management and law enforcement and crime prevention duties.

  • Patrols buildings, grounds and parking areas on foot or in a patrol vehicle to maintain order, protect persons and property, control traffic, provide first aid and to prevent trespassing, theft or damage.

  • Investigates complaints made directly to Public Safety-SCCC or assigned investigations from the administration.

  • Works with partner agencies enforcing the laws of the State of New York and federal higher education laws.

  • Secures and checks all doors, windows and entrances to building to be sure that they are secure.

  • Assures that all doors and entrances are unlocked for daily activities and classes.

  • Makes regularly scheduled fire inspections of building s and fire extinguishers.

  • Makes operational checks of a variety of heating and cooling equipment, reporting any malfunctions.

  • Controls and directs traffic on campus or campus related roads, grounds and parking areas.

  • Investigates motor vehicle accidents that occur on campus or campus related property. Manages traffic on adjacent campus roads during incidents.

  • Issues parking Violation Tickets.

  • Enforces the Student Code of Conduct; testifies in hearings and criminal courts.

  • Performs assists to motorists, e.g. Lock-outs, dead batteries and other vehicular problems.

  • Gives directions and information to students and visitors.

  • Contacts snow removal contractor/grounds crew when necessary.

  • Responds to intrusion alarms and fire alarms.

  • Files electronic reports and maintains an appropriate system of records and reports. Manages database for reports; scans reports; uses MS products.

  • Will be required to conduct Title IX and NYS Sexual Misconduct investigations.

  • Provide transportation to other campuses for special events and meetings. Be able to operate central dispatch operations.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the practices and procedures required to insure maintenance of order and security of buildings, grounds and equipment; good knowledge of safety precautions necessary to eliminate existing and potential security, safety and fire hazards; working knowledge of the Penal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Vehicle and Traffic Laws of the State of New York; working knowledge of law enforcement statutes pertaining to a variety of offenses and working knowledge of investigative techniques; good knowledge of standard police, fire and emergency communication codes; ability to communicate effectively with others; use technology specifically email and database systems; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to prepare clear, and concise reports; good judgment; tact; courtesy; resourcefulness; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Graduation from a standard senior high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma

B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science or closely related field, OR, one (1) year of experience in a law enforcement agency or security force; OR

C. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an AA degree

D. Five (5) years full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a Municipal Police Trained Police Officer, NYS Peace Officer, with a current training certificate, OR,

E. Any equivalent combination of training and experience defined through the limits of A, B, C and D of above.

HIRING SALARY:

  • Hiring Salary is based on the qualifications. Minimum starting salary is $36,879. annually and full range of benefits. The position has overtime possibilities.

  • Shifts (24/7) vary by need of the organization. The position may have mandatory carry over shifts. All officers are considered essential employees and must respond to the college during emergency situations (weather, county declarations etc.)

  • Once interviewed the candidate will undergo a medical physical; psychological and agility testing; and a criminal background check.

  • Candidates must have the pre-employment NYS security guard licensing on file before hiring.

  • No waivers are offered for retired NYS applicants currently in the NYS retirement systems.

  • Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment; appointees must maintain a valid license throughout their employment in this title.

*Provisional Appointment – This position requires an appointment from a certified eligible list and currently there is no established list. For you to become a permanent employee, you must pass the examination and be reachable (Rule of Three) on the certified eligible list that results from the civil service examination for this position.
