Duties Description The Regional Trail Technician is a full-time, seasonal position that assists the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) in maintaining its extensive network of trails. This position will work throughout the Saratoga Capital Region of New York State Parks, which includes parks and historic sites across Albany, Saratoga, Schenectady, Fulton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Washington, Schoharie, Greene, Columbia, and Essex Counties. The primary focus of Regional Trail Technician(s) is to work as a team in the form of a regional trail crew on high-priority trail projects that aim to restore, build, and improve recreational trails to sustainable standards through skilled hands-on construction. Under the supervision of the Regional Trails Specialist, this hands-on role involves a variety of trail construction and maintenance tasks in backcountry and frontcountry settings. Duties include, but are not limited to: - Performing a wide range of trail maintenance and construction tasks throughout the region in a variety of outdoor weather conditions; projects include new trail construction, tread and drainage improvements, stone staircases and retaining walls, bog bridge and trail bridge construction, hazard tree removal, signage installation, and general facilities maintenance- Must possess strong skills in sustainable trail-building techniques to perform a variety of hands-on skilled work (carpentry, dry stone masonry, erosion mitigation, trail stabilization, rigging, and compact equipment operation)- Working closely with the Regional Trails Specialist on regional trail project execution and delivering sustainable trail work improvements to the projects being worked on. - Properly transporting materials to and from worksites - Educating the public when approached on the work being done - Communicating effectively with other staff, supervisors, and park patrons in a responsible and courteous manner. - Driving a provided State or rental vehicle daily, hiking daily to and from work sites, maintaining a clean work vehicle, maintaining tools, gear, and equipment, and keeping a clean, organized, and safe workplace. - Wearing the proper PPE during work tasks, demonstrating safe workplace practices, - Performing other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.
Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS: * Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment. * Must be at least 18 years old * Must possess strong organizational and critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently or on a team. * Must be able to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time outside and lift up to 50 lbs. * Must be willing to keep current on all mandated safety trainings, including First Aid and CPR/AED.
