Position Summary
The Professional Development and Leadership Officer executes the Professional Development and Leadership Program (PDL) of Columbia Engineering. This includes (1) executing over 250 professional development sessions annually, (2) reconciling student attendance and engagement (2500+ student enrollment), and (3) evaluating and assessing the session quality. The position will also partner with the Graduate Career Placement team to deepen existing employer relationships to hire Columbia Engineers and Applied Scientists, execute programs within the GCP umbrella, and further students' professional development.
Responsibilities
PDL Execution (70%):
With the PDL team, execute 250+ professional development workshops per year, including facilitating in-person, virtual, and hybrid workshop delivery.
Execute the PDL Fellows program, which consists of high-impact sessions for a select cohort of students.
On-board and support instructors (adjunct faculty, Columbia staff, industry partners, alumni, and other subject matter experts) to deliver content to students.
Gather, analyze, and report on PDL session feedback to inform recommendations made to instructors and PDL leadership.
Manage and set up technologies and course administration applications to track student progress, host videos/tutorials, communication, and assignments
Advertise, market, and communicate the offerings of PDL to students, prospective students, and other constituents, including marketing office and student group events.
Liaise with CVN and other School units to capture the contents of the modules, electives, and workshops.
Obtain and manage resources (rooms, materials, etc.).
Host open office hours for all student inquiries including addressing and advising student inquiries in a timely manner, escalate urgent issues to the PDL Manager.
Graduate Career Placement (GCP) (15%):
Coordinate shared management of resources (rooms, materials) needed for graduate career placement and PDL purposes.
Support GCP program execution, including Employer Expo, Executive in Residence, and On-campus interviewing.
Engineering Student Affairs (10%):
Support signature Columbia Engineering student affairs activities, including Welcome Day, Graduate Engineers Connect, graduation ceremonies, and other school-wide initiatives for engineering students.
Serve on ESA committees, support large-scale student life programming, and participate in division-wide ESA priorities as needed.
Other Related Duties (5%): Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor's degree is required; graduate-level work is preferred. Minimum of 2-4 years of related student/academic affairs or professional development (including campus recruiting, career placement/coaching, or human resources) experience required.
Must be able to communicate effectively and tactfully with staff, faculty, students, employers, and alumni in small and large group settings. Excellent command of English (verbal and written). Experience with large-group facilitation preferred.
Able to analyze and work with large volumes of student data. Strong computer literacy/proficiency (Google suite of products, MS Office, social media, etc.) required.
Familiarity and appreciation in working with international and domestic students in higher education.
Possess excellent interpersonal and administrative skills. Ability to work independently and under pressure, with a high level of attention to detail. Candidates must exercise good judgment and flexibility. Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
Must be willing to work on occasional evenings and weekends, on a need basis.
