Landscaping Laborer

Position reports to: Director of Facilities

Subordinate Staff: None

Responsibilities:

Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds and trails. Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers. Mow and edge lawns, using power mowers and edgers. Plant seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees and shrubs, and apply mulch for protection, using gardening tools. Decorate gardens Follow planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage. Gather and remove litter. Haul or spread topsoil, and spread straw over seeded soil to hold soil in place. Rake, mulch and compost leaves. Prune and trim trees, trees, and hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws. Water lawns, trees, and plants, using portable sprinklers, hoses, or watering cans. Advise customers on plant selection and care Install drainage systems, retaining walls if needed Maintain and repair tools, equipment, and structures such as buildings, fences, and benches, using hand and power tools. Provide upkeep of trails, driveways, planters, and other ground features. Shovel Snow from walks, driveways, parking lots, and spread salt in those areas. Use irrigation methods to adjust the amount of water consumption and to prevent waste. Care for artificial turf fields, periodically removing the turf and replacing cushioning pads. Operate powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, chain saws, wood chipper. Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, saws, hedge and brush trimmers, and axes.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

1.Minimum 18 years of age 2.High school diploma or equivalent experience. 3.Sit and/or stand for long periods. 4.Willingness to work with people, in a helpful friendly manner 5.Basic Knowledge of : a.Methods used in maintenance including basic knowledge of the following trades: painting, grounds keeping, standard practices and tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities; safety practices and procedures related to the building trades; basic math to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. 6.Skills and Ability to: a.Effectively use a variety of hand and power tools; review and identify projects needed to be serviced by outside contractors; follow oral and/or written instructions; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; maintain work logs; establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work assignments. 7.Possession of a valid New York State Drivers License 8.Willingness to work outside (if necessary) in inclement weather.

Salary: $15.50/hour
