SAFETY AND SECURITY OFFICER (Part-time)
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is part-time law enforcement work with responsibility for security control of a school building and the surrounding grounds. Incumbents in this class are empowered to use reasonable physical force within the scope of New York State Laws as a Peace Officer in carrying out the duties of the position. Work is performed under the general supervision of the administrative official in accordance with established policies and procedures and requires the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Participates in providing security for all occupants of school building and grounds;
Patrols parking lots, hallways and monitors students' movement for evidence of unusual or disruptive behavior;
Watches for and intervenes in student and public disturbances on school properties and reports all instances of intervention and observation of unusual activity to an administrative official;
Investigates suspicious activities and complaints of unwanted cars on school property;
Provides crowd control before and after school functions and other public gatherings;
Prevents unauthorized visitors from entering school buildings and/or loitering on school grounds;
Directs visitors to various offices within the school and checks hall passes;
Communicates with various district personnel and provides proper and timely reports on safety concerns;
Builds relationships with students and public to formulate understanding and cooperation;
May represent school district in court-related matters.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the procedures and regulations pertaining to policing crowd control and security measures; ability to maintain order; proficiency in the use of a pistol; ability to understand and carry out moderately complex oral and written directions; ability to deal tactfully with the public; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and possession of a currently valid New York State Certification as a Police Officer or Peace Officer,ANDNew York State Pistol Permit at time of application, appointment and during service in this classification.
