Capital Region BOCES School Lunch Manager in Albany, New York

Location: Management Services - Greater Amsterdam School District

Basic Function:

This is an important position involving responsibility for efficiently and economically providing nutritious lunches for school children in districts that participate in Capital Region BOCES’s Shared Food Service Programs. Work is performed under the direction of the School Lunch Director (BOCES). Leads the work of one or more cook-managers and other school lunch program personnel. Does related work as required.

Responsibilities:

  1. Plans and leads the preparation and service of lunches in the school districts that participate in the service. 2. Determines requirements and submits requisitions for foods, supplies and equipment. 3. Maintains approved standards of sanitation, health and safety. 4. Leads and trains school lunch personnel, recommends staff assignments and assists in the evaluation of work performance. 5. Assists in the selection of school lunch personnel. 6. Receives, inspects, stores and distributes supplies and maintains inventories and related records. 7. Oversees the collection of and accounting for cash receipts. 8. Makes reports relating to school lunch program activities. 9. Provides information to school staff, students and community agencies, which will promote increased interest in the program. 10. Good knowledge of the fundamentals of nutrition and their application to the health of children. 11. Good knowledge of all phases of the school lunch program. 12. Good knowledge of the principles and practices of large quantity food preparation, menu planning, purchasing, equipment selection and care, sanitary food handling and storage. 13. Ability to plan and lead the work of others. 14. Ability to train personnel. 15. Ability to keep records and prepare reports. 16. Ability to maintain good personal relations with children and adults. 17. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; 18. Initiative. 19. Neat personal appearance. 20. Tact and good judgment. 21. Courtesy. 22. Resourcefulness. 23. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Job Qualifications

A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with at least a Bachelor’s degree in food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business or a closely related field and one (1) year of large scale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting; OR, B. Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business or a closely related field and three (3) years of large scale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting; OR, C. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of large scale food service experience in a commercial or an institutional setting.

Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
